PAEDIATRIC

Children's Hearing Assessments

Evidence-based testing for children from 9 months and adults of all ages

Children's hearing assessments are tailored to each child's developmental stage to obtain reliable and meaningful results in a supportive environment. Testing is available from 9 months of age.

  • For children 2.5 to 6 years

Children are taught to perform a simple play task - for example, placing a block in a box - whenever they hear a sound. This allows accurate assessment of hearing thresholds in a fun and engaging way suited to young children.

  • For infants 9 months to 2.5 years

This test measures hearing responses by training a child to turn toward a sound stimulus, which is then rewarded with a visual reinforcement such as a lighted toy. It helps determine hearing sensitivity in infants and toddlers who are too young for formal testing.

Attending with your child

A parent or guardian is required to sit with children under 5 years during testing. Where possible, please make alternative arrangements for young siblings, as their presence can affect the accuracy of results. Children can sometimes become too tired or distracted to complete a full assessment - we will always do our best and will advise on next steps if testing cannot be fully completed.

DIAGNOSTIC

Diagnostic Hearing Tests

The following tests are used across paediatric and adult assessments to build a comprehensive picture of hearing function. The most appropriate combination is determined on the day based on the patient's age, presentation, and clinical need.

  • Standard hearing test · 6 years and over

A standard hearing test measuring sensitivity across a range of frequencies and sound levels. Tones are presented through headphones and the patient indicates when they hear each sound. This test provides detailed information about hearing thresholds and overall auditory function.

  • Age-appropriate · children and adults

Speech testing evaluates how well speech sounds are detected and understood, in quiet and where appropriate in background noise. These measures help assess functional listening ability and how hearing may affect communication in everyday situations.

  • Middle-ear function assessment

This test assesses middle-ear function by measuring how the eardrum moves in response to changes in air pressure. It is useful for identifying fluid, middle-ear pressure issues, or eardrum abnormalities.

  • Cochlear function · quick and non-invasive

OAEs measure sound responses generated by the inner ear (cochlea). This quick, non-invasive test helps assess cochlear function and is particularly useful in infants, young children, and difficult-to-test patients.

  • Auditory pathway assessment

Acoustic reflex testing measures involuntary muscle responses in the middle ear to loud sounds. It provides additional information about the auditory pathway and middle-ear system, complementing other diagnostic measures.

  • Objective threshold estimation

ASSR is an objective hearing test that estimates hearing thresholds across multiple frequencies. It is particularly useful for determining the degree and configuration of hearing loss in patients unable to participate in conventional testing.

  • Neural pathway evaluation · objective testing

ABR testing evaluates how sound signals travel from the ear to the brainstem. Small electrodes are placed on the head to record neural responses to sound. This test is commonly used for infants, young children, or when behavioural testing is not reliable.

Note

Please arrive 10 mins early to your appointment to complete the audiology patient questionnaire. Testing will take approximately 30 mins to complete. A full report will be sent to your referring doctor. Medicare rebates apply. Please bring in your referral to your appointment. Fees are due on the day of your appointment.

This practice does not prescribe or fit hearing aids. Independent diagnostic assessments are provided along with clear clinical recommendations, and referrals back to your GP or ENT specialist are made as appropriate.

GP and ENT referred hearing assessment is $150 with an approximate rebate of $33 - $55.
